Have you ever thought about how we as humans are so very different?
We all have genes, DNA, muscles, organs, etc. But, we are all so very different in so many ways. My DNA is different from yours, my body has different muscle mass, hair color, eye color, etc.
So, why do we feel like one diet is going to work for every single person, no questions asked?
I have spoken about bio-individuality before, but I always feel like it's important to bring our awareness back to this very important topic. Looking at your own bio individual needs, desires, lifestyle and your nutrient intake there is always going to be variations to what you will need.
One of the greatest challenges we all deal with right now is living in a culture that is constantly throwing out all the latest and greatest in diets, foods, fast fix supplements, detoxes, shakes, etc. So, late at night when laying in bed ruminating about how you need to change your diet you begin the death scroll through social media and find all these new amazing techniques for weight loss, the best new micro green, and the latest fat loss supplement. You are ready to order all three and get it going because you gotta do something now!
And, somehow you have dropped $200 plus without batting an eyelash and you have no idea if this is ACTUALLY going to work.
Hmmmmm, this is starting to sound like setting yourself up for some serious failures…and going to probably lead to a pint of ice cream or some sort of comfort food that you need to just get through.
Ugh…is this resonating with you?
Social media is not going anywhere, new supplements and diets are going to continue to come flying at you all the time. You can start to slow down and find some simple foundational steps to change.
Notice, I am back to my favorite word “Foundational”, it is really where we need to start. When we can come back to the foundations of food, digestion, movement, sleep, and hydration we can shift.
If you can work on these foundations YOU WILL start to see shifts. When we get positive shifts we are more open and accepting of trying another step. We have the capacity to take on another challenge for better health.
Is it easy to make these changes? No, not always.
I will ask you though…
Do you feel like it's easy to have only gotten 4 hours of sleep?
Is it easy on you to have not moved your body and your joints feel tight and stiff?
Is it easy to have headaches because you are not getting enough water each day?
My guess, no it is not.
Foundations I am going to ask you to think about:
FOOD: Keep it simple, eat WHOLE FOOD. Think about getting as many colors of food on your plate as you can. Start to eat fresh veggies and fruits. Each plate should have some healthy protein, fats, and healthy carbs. LESS boxed and packaged food means less sugar, processed foods, and chemicals. That, my friend, is a win.
DIGESTION: This is a big topic, and one that I TALK ABOUT A LOT! (check out this post on digestion!) I would venture to guess that most of you could share with me some sort of digestive issue you are struggling with. Such as constipation, heartburn, stomach aches, diarrhea, food sensitivities, etc.
STOP eating on the go! Make a meal a time to rest and digest. No devices or screens. Sit with your family or a friend and take a few deep breaths before you eat
Consider a digestive enzyme or take some Apple Cider Vinegar before eating to prep your digestive enzymes and stomach acid to digest your food!
MOVEMENT: Move your body EVERY SINGLE DAY! I am not asking you to run a marathon, but I do invite you to consider a 20 min walk every single day, and maybe make it twice a day. Just that alone can make an incredible difference on your physical and mental health! (You can check out my post on yoga here!)
SLEEP: This one, WHOA, I am going to be honest…people are terrible with their sleep! You need 8 hours a night. I invite you to consider creating a nighttime routine that brings your body down. Such as turning lights down low, putting devices and screens away, and not eating for about 1-2 hours before going to bed. This can honestly be a HUGE game changer for people. Your body heals while you sleep, so the less you sleep the less your body gets the ability to regenerate and heal.
HYDRATION: DRINK WATER! And, consider drinking 1 ⁄ 2 your body weight in ounces, so if you weigh 150 pounds, you need 75 oz of water a day. Yup, that is correct, you DO need that much. And, no you are not going to be peeing all day. Your body will adjust and even add some electrolytes so the water absorbs more effectively into your body. (If you want more details, read my post on hydration!) You WILL feel amazing!
Walking the path to better health is HARD.
Most of us have taken years of NOT taking care of ourselves, so to assume that just one supplement, super detox, or diet is going to repair years of damage is going to bring on some serious failure.
I do not want you to fail at this, I want you to feel like these foundations are bringing on a lifestyle change, one that is attainable and doable so you can feel successful at feeling good. No, it is not going to happen overnight, it takes some time and effort and pure straight up love for yourself to feel better.
You will feel better, I promise.
You will also fail and fall flat on your face, and that is ok. You get to pick yourself back up, and have a “do over” for tomorrow.
You are unique, and your own bio-individuality makes you the amazing human that you are, so why not feel the best you can while you are here!
