Let’s have a brief chat about exfoliation and why we need to have it in our skincare regimen! To really captivate you I created the above video, sharing some great tips and products that I believe hold such great value and results for creating incredible results with your skin!
What is exfoliation?
verb
(of a material) come apart or be shed from a surface in scales or layers.
"the bark exfoliates in papery flakes"
cause (a surface) to shed material in scales or layers.
"salt solutions exfoliate rocks on evaporating"
wash or rub (a part of the body) with a granular substance to remove dead cells from the surface of the skin.
"exfoliate your legs to get rid of dead skin"
This is a process that is very important and necessary for our skin, to support its natural ability to desquamation process. This is the process by the outer most layer of your skin sheds. There are five layers to the skin, and they are constantly shifting and stuffing off. Now, when we are born, this process happens incredibly fast, about 8 days and we have a brand new skin! Crazy, right! So, this slows as we age, so I am now 47 years old, and my desquamation takes somewhere around 30-45 days! Yup, so now we need some support.
Why + How do we exfoliate?
When our skin desquamation process slows, the the dead skin cells are building up faster, the skin appears dull and more lack luster, and even we experience clogged pores and even some black heads where dirt and grime are starting oxidize in our pores. We need to be able to support this with some sort of exfoliant. This can be a physical product like Bamboo particles, they are used to roll over the surface of the skin to collect the dead skin cells off the surface of the skin.
Or a chemical product like AHA, BHA which is a type of hydroxy acid. The AHA is a water soluble soluble acid derived from sugary fruits and BHA are oil soluble and will get a bit deeper into the skin and pore structures.
Both AHA + BHA offer results such as:
decreasing inflammation, which is a key marker for people with rosacea, acne, etc
decreasing the appearance of large pores and surface wrinkles
even out skin tone
remove dead skin cells
clear out pores
Now, they each have their own special skill sets too!
AHA:
Focuses more on hyperpigmentation and age spots
fine lines and surface wrinkles
reducing the appearance of pores
tends to be more friendly for all skin types
Glycolic Acid is the most commonly used AHA, it is derived from sugar cane
BHA:
used for acne and sun damage
goes deeper into your hair follicles to dry out excess oils and dead skin cells to clear out deep in the pores
Used mostly with combination + oil skin types
Salicylic Acid is the most common BHA, and is most commonly used for acne and inflammation
Here is the deal, all these exfoliation techniques offer great benefits and offer really great results for your skin when you included them in your daily regimen.
When should you exfoliate?
This is a rather broad question. It does depend on the type of process you are doing. When you have a skin care regimen you may do your exfoliation in two different steps of your process.
The first step is to cleanse, and you do have the ability to use an Exfoliating Clear Pore Cleanser, that would have your bamboo particles in the cleanser to allow for a deep cleanse. Or, another amazing product is Reflect Effect Bamboobuff Exfoliating Polish, this is incredible to simply add a small amount to your cleanser. These physical exfoliation has a very gentle approach and is a great way start!
From cleansing you will tone the skin and move into your treatment process of your regimen. This is the step at which you would apply your Exfoliating Mask or Peel of choice! The two fan favorites of mine are the Reflect Effect Overnight Resurfacing Peel (this can be done a couple of times a week!) and the Reflect Effect AHA Smoothing Facial Mask (this mask should be done once a week or so)
Following this step, you complete the regimen with your serum and moisturizer. You get to walk away feeling fresh and new!!
Don’t forget, your body is dealing with similar issues! You feel dry, dehydrated, and itchy, especially in the winter and spring! It is time to try some tricks!
The first recommendation that I have is for you to start dry brushing your body before taking a shower! Using a dry brush softly all over the body, moving the in an upward motion in the direction of your heart is incredible for sluffing off dead skin cells, rejuvenating the skin, and increasing blood and lymph flow. Simply apply a couple drops of Geranium, cedarwood, or grapefruit essential oils into your moisturizer or body oil and rub throughout the body. Simply use your dry brush and move up the body! This can be done right before your shower in the morning!
Lastly, a new found love is the Reflect Effect Overnight Resurfacing Body Peel! This is the same as the product you use on our face but designed for your body! Simply apply to skin before you go to bed! Yes! It is that simple!
Just know, you do not have to do everything at once! Take one product and try incorporating this new step in your skincare regimen. If it’s overwhelming or feel like you need support I am here for you! Let’s schedule a call and talk through what your specific needs are!!! You can always find me here!
I will continue to share the knowledge with all of you! And, feel free to share with your friends and family! I do share all this knowledge from my heart, these are products that I love and I also make my income! I always want to be up front with you all!
