We love the holidays so much…but do we really?
Tips and Tricks to stay grounded and healthy this holiday!
It is that time of year again. We come together to celebrate various holidays, spend time with family and friends, eat incredible food, drink and be merry….but are we really enjoying it?
How are we taking care of ourselves throughout all of these events that take place?
Do you take care of yourself during the holidays?
I can say that for many years that I did not do anything really to support myself and by the end of the holiday season the exhaustion was real and many times ended up with some sort of sickness.
I want to be able to support you through the holidays. To be able to share with you some of the things that have helped me to shift how I approach my holidays with the first priority being ME! You will have such a greater capacity to be there and share great memories with your loved ones if you have taken the time to make yourself the priority!
Let’s dive in!
1. It is time to prioritize Rest!
Think about it, you are typically having down time and days off from your normal life and work environment. We tend to pack it full of activities out of this desire to do ALL the things before you run out of time.
What would it be like to schedule your REST? Yes, you heard me right. This is where you can take time to rest with a nap, a long hot bath, or a sweet quiet guided meditation. The holidays can offer such amazing opportunities to create lifelong memories, and it can create a sense of overwhelm and anxiety. So, give yourself the tool of REST. I can promise you there is such self compassion in this step…and leads you to step 2.
2. Offer yourself compassion!
This might sound simple. I will be honest with you…this can actually be really challenging. This is something that does take practice. When we get together with our friends and family we can feel so much love. It can also bring so much past history “stuff” that can show up. Sometimes, this can cause us to make decisions that sacrifice ourselves. When we can slow down, we can access that compassionate place a little bit easier.
Take moments to focus on your breath. This does not have to be complicated, you can close your eyes and take three deep breaths and this can be enough for you to give yourself some compassion and you will be able to reset yourself a bit.
I invite you to explore my substack on Alternate Nostril Breathing to help you reset your parasympathetic system.
Give yourself some ease and self compassion when the overwhelm sets in!
3. Set some boundaries!
Schedule your holiday. I know, that can kinda feel like you are creating structure in a part of your life that should not have structure. I promise you that it will help. When you schedule in the times that you need to move your OWN body, breathe, grab a nap, and eat the nourishing foods it is going to make your holiday experience SO much better.
Now, there are the physical things that you need to work with, and there are the emotional boundaries that need to be created as well. This is not something that will come naturally or feel comfortable at all! This is probably the most important boundary. Give yourself permission to say NO to the things that do not fill up your cup. This will not always make the people in your life happy, and that is completely ok!
Give yourself permission to put yourself first. You got this.
This holiday I hope you can find space for yourself. My gratitude for you all is immense, and I will continue to offer you as much support as I can.
